The Commonwealth Commission on War Graves cares for numerous sites. The Thiepval Memorial remembers over 72,000 soldiers who died, but whose graves are unknown. During the first day of the battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, more than 57,000 British soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing, the worst single day in British military history.
