582. Religious Art from a Pilgrim’s Perspective, 3

Here are some more church photos depicting Jesus as Resurrected and as Pantocrator. Jesus with banner leaving the sarcophagus is the common theme. Also, Jesus freeing those who are dead is frequent.

Seldom a tomb grave. Seldom post-resurrection events such as road to Emmaus or disciples by the Sea of Galilee. I also didn’t see any art showing doubting Thomas. These other scenes may have been portrayed, but I didn’t easily identify them.

An Angel at the Empty Tomb

Risen Christ

In Rome’s Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Michelangelo’s sculpture of the Risen Christ carrying his cross. Wikipedia states that a contemporary “Sebastiano del Piombo declared that the knees alone were worthy of more than the whole Rome.” I don’t think an art critic today would make such a declaration!

Cortona’s Cathedral has this striking arrangement. The Crucified Christ is on the wall; in front, a Risen Christ strides forward. I’ve included the actual photograph and an edited black and white.

The Pantocrator

Lucca’s Basilica of San Frediano has this Byzantine looking Pantocrator from the 13th century.
